HEAT AND HEALTH – HOW DANGEROUS IS HEAT FOR OUR ORGANS?

Hitzenotfall: Frau bricht über PC zusammen

Did you know that not only the cardiovascular system and the lungs are affected by the heat, but that the kidneys also suffer greatly from heat stress?

According to Prof. Dr. Thomas Bein from the University of Regensburg, heat is a threat to all organ systems. In particular, the risk of heart attacks and strokes increases, lung function deteriorates and dehydration leads to disturbances in fluid and electrolyte balance. This significantly increases the risk of acute kidney dysfunction. If left untreated, chronic damage can occur and, in the worst case, even multi-organ failure.

HEAT - THE GREATEST HEALTH RISK DUE TO GLOBAL WARMING

Heat is the greatest health risk in Germany due to climate change. It can be dangerous for everyone and the risk will continue to increase in the coming years. The annual Heat Action Days therefore appeal to everyone to take heat hazards seriously and to consistently implement heat protection measures.

STRESS IN THE WORKPLACE

Scientists and the media have repeatedly reported that more employees are struggling with heat problems than is widely assumed:

  • 23 percent of employees feel very stressed at work during a heatwave.
  • More than two thirds of employees feel that their performance is limited by extreme temperatures.
  • Almost a fifth of all employees have heat-related health problems.

According to Professor Bein, suitable preventative heat adaptation measures such as the use of cooling clothing and acute heat management are key issues for the coming summer.

You can also help by repeatedly drawing your employees’ attention to the dangers of high temperatures and providing them with the appropriate heat protection measures.
